Welcome to Gundam Plus II, the successor to the original Gundam Plus site.
Char's Counterattack
People are going to find my movie reviews to be quite different and most likely unique compared to others. Unlike other sites I won’t give you every detail about the movie, every plot twist and how it ends. I want you to see the movie yourself; I’m not going to give you a running play by play so you can skip watching it and know exactly what happened. /what I will give you is what the movie is about, what I liked and/or didn’t like and then a quick summary of my final thoughts. I also use a 5 “star” or “snowflake” rating system at the end for the movie. Now you know so it’s on to the review.
The Story
This movie takes place in the Universal Century timeline, U.C. 0093 to be exact, and follows the events of Gundam ZZ (Mobile Suit Gundam Double Zeta). Char Aznable has returned and taken leadership to the Neo-Zeon to continue the fight against Earth and the Federation. Char is pursued by Amuro Ray, Bright Noa and the Londo Bell task force in an effort to stop him. Stop them they must for Char has a plan, a plan to end the fighting once and for all. Drop the Axis asteroid on Earth. Can the Earth Forces catch up to the Neo-Zeon in time? Will Char succeed in dropping Axis on Earth?
What worked and what didn’t work
This flick is quite the fan favourite and it shows in the movie. Right from the action packed beginning through the story telling and the fight at the end this flick is a quick 2hrs for the watcher. This is also where the fan favourite Mobile Suits the Nu Gundam and the Sazabi also make their appearance. So, given all that’s been said what could one dislike about the flick? First off, the story tends to slow down a bit in the middle. Nothing terrible but enough that you may start wishing that it picks up the pace a bit. As well, some of the secondary characters seems to have little to no face time but enough to make them seem like they’re vital to the story. Also, one gets the idea that they could see a little more of the Nu and the Sazabi in action rather than for the amount one does see of the suits.
Final Thoughts
I didn’t see this one until well after almost everyone else did and by that time I bought into the hype of it. In fact, much like other Gundam series, this wasn’t shown on TV in Canada. As with all other movies or shows that are hyped, they generally don’t live up to the billing. Does this fall into that? Yes and no. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good flick and a must see for any Gundam Fan but it’s definitely not the greatest offering Gundam wise. Still, at 124 minutes it’s definitely worth the time putting in and seeing, if only to see the final fight between Amuro and Char.
