Welcome to Gundam Plus II, the successor to the original Gundam Plus site.
Gundam F91
People are going to find my movie reviews to be quite different and most likely unique compared to others. Unlike other sites I won’t give you every detail about the movie, every plot twist and how it ends. I want you to see the movie yourself; I’m not going to give you a running play by play so you can skip watching it and know exactly what happened. /what I will give you is what the movie is about, what I liked and/or didn’t like and then a quick summary of my final thoughts. I also use a 5 “star” or “snowflake” rating system at the end for the movie. Now you know so it’s on to the review.
The Story
This movie takes place in the Universal Century timeline, U.C. 0123 to be exact. 30 years of Peace has passed with the Zeon and Neo-Zeon being long gone. However, as always with peace it doesn’t last. A new faction calling themselves the Crossbones Vanguard emerges to take control of the space colonies and over throw the Earth. Caught in the crossfire of this conflict is Seabook Arno, a college student who watches friends die and gets forced into piloting a new prototype Gundam. However, the more he pilots the machine the more he discovers newtype abilities that he can use with the Gundam to turn the tide in the war.
What worked and what didn’t work
At times I found this movie to be a tad confusing and very rushed. The fact that it was originally suppose to be a full 50+ episode series isn’t surprising when watching the movie. That being said, it’s still an interesting look into the future of the Uc timeline, which hopefully will be expanded upon in the future. The F91 isn’t really special per say but it is one of the more memorial Gundam. The villain “Iron Mask” is just you’re a-typical masked villain who is closer to a Darth Vader rip-off than a “Char-clone”.
Final Thoughts
I really had high hopes for this one. For a change, the main character isn't as annoying or whiney as previous heroes despite being unwilling to pilot the machine. However, the movie itself felt extremely rushed throughout and many of the plot twists felt like they were glossed over where in a series format they could be explained and expanded upon. Still, it is a decent movie however one shouldn’t expect anything spectacular.
