Episode 3 - The Twisted Colony

Review by Nimrod

We start off this week with a quick summary of where things are – the colony is screwed by the UE attack, the people are trying to evacuate, Grodek may be up to something as he takes command of the Diva, Flit saves a girl named Yurin, the Gundam gets a new gun thanks to the AgeBuilder and just as things seem fine two more UE mobile suits appear. That’s the summary as we hit the opening credits.

We‘re back and we pick right up with the two new units approaching and we learn that they are “very fast”. We get to see some of the Diva’s firepower as it deploys its anti-aircraft guns but they can’t land a hit against the faster UE units. The one grayish-brow unit gets right up to the bridge of the Diva but doesn’t shoot, much to the confusion of the crew.

Meanwhile, the other UE Mobile suit has gone off to engage Flit, Yurin and the Gundam. He’s not having an easy time fighting this enemy as it’s sticking in close and not allowing him to use the DOTS rifle that’s able to destroy these units all the while the evacuation to the core of the colony is still taking place with the connections from the colony to the Diva being made as well.

On the Diva as Bruzar communicates with the ship and shares she surprise that Grodek was “made” captain of the ship while getting a quick briefing of the current goings on. Umm…shouldn’t he know if he’s still in the command center? We’re also reminded that the colony has less than thirty minutes before it’s destroyed. It’s at this point we also learn that the ship has no other combat ready Mobile Suits so it will be up to Flit alone to deal with the enemies.

Speaking of which, we see Flit is still having no luck with his foe as he keeps firing his gun and the enemy keeps dancing around it. As he continues to get more frustrated, Yurin tells him he needs to calm down and takes his hand as we see she uses some weird magic to give Flit Newtype like powers. No, I’m not making that up. Anyway, with said ability Flit is now able to predict the Enemy’s pattern and manages to take the shot that takes it out. One down, one to go.

Now that second unit, the one that freaked out the bridge crew has appeared inside the colony. After doing a scan it attacks and virtually destroys the Command center, with Bruzar in it and leaving him for dead. Before this, the Diva orders Flit and the Gundam to go after the UE unit.  Inside the Diva Dique urges Vargus to use the Age builder but we learn that it would be useless without any new data on the enemy. Well, at least the thing has some form of limitation. The enemy unit then flies out through one of the holes in the Colony and runs into the Gundam as they begin their combat.

With the enemy unit busy we learn that the evacuation is complete but without the final command from the command center to disconnect the core they’re in trouble. Bruzar then contacts the Diva and tells them he’s going to the old construction management center, from when the colony was first built,  he kept opened “just in case”. Well, isn’t that convenient. We also see that Bruzar is severely injured from said attack and is bleeding heavily.

Back outside as the mobile suit fight continues with Flit firing away trying to hit the enemy unit but not coming anywhere close to it. It’s during this that Flit begins to figure out that there could be more to Yurin then meets the eye. You know, for a boy genius he’s really dumb.

We then go back to Bruzar as he’s making his way to the command area and we get a flashback of Flit arriving at the colony along with the time the six year old begins to design and build the Gundam on the colony. The believability factor for this series is just dropping really fast. Back outside as the battle continues with Yurin using her powers to help Flit predict and evade the enemy attacks along with getting some minor hits on it. Wasn’t that gun a one shot kill but now it’s not? With the fight continuing we see Bruzar making the final adjustments and then he disconnects the core of the colony so the Diva can pull it away to safety. As all seems to be working out with the Diva pulling the core away as the Ue unit flies away from Flit but Flit, despite being low on energy gets one final shot off to stop the Ue suit and then uses the Gundam to stand in the way of the enemy unit with flit making a “you shall not pass” type of speech. Rather than attacking, the enemy unit just turns and flies away.

The colony then suffers a few explosions that cause debris to fall and block the core. Not being done, Bruzar flies in a construction unit loaded with explosives towards the section. He then contacts Flit, who wants to try and save him but gives him not only a version of “the needs of the many” speech from star trek with regards to protecting the people of the colony but he also whips out “with powers comes responsibility” regarding the Gundam. No wonder the Colony imploded with using those speeches in the same scene. The gist of it is that Bruzar is telling Flit to use the Gundam to protect humanity as Flit had intended all those years ago. Yup, definitely Super Robot. Anyway, Bruzar gives up his life as he flies in the obstruction, destroying it and setting the core free and the Diva managed to pull it away and we see the colony twist, turn, explode and implode upon itself.

In the aftermath on the Diva we learn that the Federation is sending a fleet to pick up the colonists from the core. Grodek orders that the rest of the colonists that were sent onto the Diva be sent to the core as they have their own mission to do. Hmm…what is your mission Grodek? Down in the hanger bay as Yurin and Flit say their goodbyes with Yurin giving Flit her hair ribbon and asking if she’ll see him again before she departs. Down in another part of the Diva, a cryogenic tube opens and someone emerges commenting that sense the smell of battle as the episode ends.

Nimrod’s Thoughts – Ok, I’ll say it: this episode felt like complete filler. It just dragged on and on. Yurin’s newtype like ability seems odd and we don’t know if she can only use it or does it now extend to Flit? There were also lots of little issues that I mentioned throughout the recap that I won’t bother repeating but I’ll sum it up by saying this was the weakest of the three episodes so far and I hope this isn’t the start of the downward trend for the series. It will be a long series if so.
