Episode 10 - I am a Newtype
A week after the battle over the flaming lake, the Freeden crew is nearing their destination at Fort Severn. Tonya asks what to do when they locate newtypes. Jamil explains there are many people who wish to use the power of newtypes. He says he’ll provide protection if necessary or bring them onboard the Freeden like Tifa. Sarah raises concern of newtypes abusing their powers. Tonya asks if they would have to fight a newtype. Jamil says that they will only if they must. The Freeden helmsman lightens the mood by pointing out the fact that three unrivaled Gundams are onboard.
In the Freeden’s hangar, Sam is quizzing the other mechanics on how they could improve the GX for use in cold areas. Three mechanics come up with answers and Sam says they’re all correct but there are 25 more ways they could do it. Just as he says that, Garrod walks in. Sam runs over to Garrod and asks him if he can improve the GX. Garrod flat refuses, saying with the Satellite Cannon, the GX is invincible. Garrod also says that Sam just wants to modify the GX. Sam says he has a bunch of cool parts, which briefly catches Garrod’s attention. Sam goes off in his own world, staring at his collection of parts and naming each of them. When he turns back, Garrod is already gone.
On the Freeden, Roybea is having a rec room set up for the crew since he’ll be there for awhile. Wits walks in holding an ugly bear statue that stuns Roy. Garrod soon enters and asks what is going on. Roybea says it’s an entertainment room but you have to be a member. Garrod gets excited and runs to Tifa’s room. Tifa doesn’t answer him because she’s in the bath. Tonya and Sarah enter the entertainment room and Tonya begins to marvel at what she sees. Sarah asks if the captain approved it. As Roy and Wits stare open mouthed, Sarah agrees to get Jamil’s permission, so long as women are not charged admission. Sarah heads out as Tonya catches sight of the bear statue Wits brought in. She begins laughing and calls it ugly. Wits has a bout of frustration. Soon after, Roybea has is ass handed to him in a pool game by the doctor. According to their bet, the Doctor can’t be charged admission into the entertainment room. Garrod and Tifa walk in and are directed to a couch. Suddenly, Tifa has a premonition of a white mobile suit.
Next, we see Tifa on the deck of the Freeden. Garrod comes up and tells her she’ll get sick. He asks if she senses a newtype. Tifa says “a little” and Garrod gives her a scarf. Now newtype, Carris Nautilus and the Mayor of Fort Severn are discussing uniting the world. They take an elevator underground to where the mobile armor, Patouria lies. Carris says they’ll need a lot of newtype power to operate it and suggests capturing Tifa to do it. Tifa wakes up from a nightmare where the GX is impaled by several beams and Garrod is screaming in agony. She tries to tell herself it was only a dream. Ennil El is seen in a car, talking to an information broker. He tells her that the Freeden is heading toward Fort Severn. She thanks him and drives away.
Tifa goes up to the bridge and suggests to Jamil that someone is waiting for the ship. Jamil orders the ship to stop. He orders the Gundams on standby and Tifa remembers her dream before rushing to the hangar. She tells Garrod about the dream and asks him not to sortie. Roybea tells him he better listen and Wits offers to fight for Garrod if Garrod pays him. Garrod asks Tifa what will happen and she tells him he will lose. As the Freeden’s bridge is scanning for enemies, some Cold Climate Jurags move in and attack.
Airmaster and Leopard launch while Tifa holds Garrod back. Garrod insists on going and launches. GX lands next to the Airmaster and Leopard and attempts to launch. He ends up kicking up a bunch of snow, blinding the Gundams. The Jurags fire into the cloud and the Gundams are helpless. Garrod runs forward and fires several shots that miss. The Jurags easily maneuver around him and attack him from all sides. Leopard and Airmaster cover Garrod but do little to change the tide of battle. In a moment, the newtype mobile suit, Bertigo enters, piloted by Carris. Garrod retrieves his rifle and chases it. Garrod misses a slice with the beam saber and Carris tells him not to get in his way. Garrod says “You must be the-“but is cut off by Carris who says “Yes, I am a newtype.” Garrod rushes the Bertigo and still fails to connect. The Bertigo launches a set of funnels. The funnels proceed to pound the GX. Jamil attempts to support Garrod with the Freeden but the Freeden’s turrets are easily downed. The whole time, Ennil El has been watching from a distance, hoping Garrod dies for resisting her. Heavy fire from the Jurags prevent Roybea and Wits from helping Garrod. Carris lines up the funnels and launches a fusillade of beams at the GX. Much like in Tifa’s dream, the GX is severely damaged and Garrod screams as he hits his head and goes unconscious. Everyone stares in shock at the battered GX. Leopard and Airmaster rush to help Garrod but are stopped by the Bertigo’s funnels. Carris ignites his beam saber and heads for the downed GX. Jamil and Tifa beg Garrod to get up. He raises the beam saber as Garrod is regaining consciousness. The episode ends as the saber is falling toward Garrod’s cockpit.
Paul Jr’s Thoughts:
Right about now, Garrod looks pretty screwed. By now, I’m sure he has no doubt about whether newtypes are real. How is anyone going to help Garrod? What will come of the Freeden now that 1/3 of their fighting force is done?
