Episode 14 - Can you hear my voice?

Review by Paul McCartney Junior

Today we pick up with Garrod standing over a wounded Carris in the cockpit of the Bertigo. Garrod begins shaking Carris and telling him not to quit. He looks at Carris’s gun and sees the magazine is missing. He asks Carris why he would do that. Carris is rushed aboard the Freeden and brought to the emergency room. Dorat finds out that Carris is taken and orders the Patouria to be charged. Garrod and Tifa are waiting outside the emergency room when the Doctor is coming out. They ask him how Carris is doing and the Doctor says Carris has somehow pulled through. Dorat and Ennil stand in front of the Patouria and Ennil asks him how he’ll run it without a newtype. Ennil volunteers to get Carris back. Later that night, Garrod exits his room, heading to the bathroom when he spots blood on the ground. He sees a trail and is in disbelief that Carris would leave.

In the snowstorm outside, Carris walks away from the Freeden, clutching is right side and limping. Garrod and Tifa set out in the jeep and follow Carris’s footprints in the snow. By the time Tifa and Garrod find him, he has already collapsed in the snow. Garrod tells him he’ll die but Carris says that is why he is out here. Garrod loses it and verbally thrashes Carris, calling him a wimp and reminding him that becoming a newtype was his own choice. Garrod helps Carris to his knees and they make an agreement not to fight anymore because both of them are just too good. Tifa notices some cold climate Jurags so Garrod, Tifa and Carris get back into the jeep. Jamil sees the jeep being chased and orders Wits and Roybea to sortie. Sam yells at his subordinate mechanics and tells them they’re not finished. He wants to repair the captured Bertigo so they can sell it.

The Jurags in pursuit cease firing for fear of hitting Carris. Ennil tells them they’re useless and rides in front of the Jeep. Her shots cause it to tip, sending Garrod, Tifa and Carris tumbling out. Ennil picks up Carris and reaches for Garrod but a few bullets courtesy of Gundam Leopard stop her. More Jurags come to cover her retreat. Roybea opens up the Leopard’s chest machine gun and easily dispatches 4 Jurags. Garrod runs in the direction Ennil went but gives up shortly. With Carris as the unwilling core life unit, Dorat awakens the Patouria. A soldier who is watching says that Fort Severn’s glory is guaranteed now that the Patouria is awakened. His optimism is canned by the Patouria’s movement causing the room to collapse over their heads. The Patouria rising from underground destroys most of the town. The Patouria’s “wings” open up and send out tentacles with the ability to fire beams.

Dorat goes on a rampage, reminding people of earth how the colonists felt during the Space War. Jurags turn and fire on the Patouria but are no match for it. Dorat says so long as he had Carris, he is unstoppable. He says that Carris will soon become one with Patouria. Mentally, Carris pleads for Dorat to stop but only Tifa appears to understand him. Leopard and Airmaster are fitted with extra rockets before they are allowed to move out. As Dorat catches the Gundams on the Patouria’s monitor, he says that Gundams are machines of the devil. The Patouria’s tentacles are more than enough to keep the three Gundams at bay. Carris says his mind is fading and Tifa repeats it to Jamil. Garrod takes down several tentacles and decides that attacking the main body might get them somewhere. Wits and Roy agree to cover him.

Garrod charges the head. All the tentacles that try to follow him are mopped up by Wits and Roybea. Garrod comments on how the tentacles are moving much like Carris’s funnels. Garrod pleads with Carris to remember their agreement not to fight. The Patouria briefly stops but Carris says it’s no use and his pupils fade away. Dorat yells “Die!” and fires a barrage of beams at Garrod. At the last second, Garrod is pulled away by the Bertigo, piloted by none other than Jamil! Dorat gets annoyed that another enemy has shown up and increases the Patouria’s output. Tifa, who is also in the Bertigo’s cockpit focuses as the Freeden Team moves toward the Patouria. Dorat and Jamil have a shouting match about the meaninglessness of the war. The Bertigo is pinned down by the tentacles and Tifa starts telling Carris to open his eyes. Carris’s pupils return and the tentacles go dormant once more. Garrod opens up the harmonica cannon in his shield and blows a hole in the Patouria.

Ennil wants to abandon ship but Dorat points a gun and calls her a defeatist. The Gundam X tears a hole in the Patouria’s cockpit and removes the chamber that Carris is in. He blows a hole in the Patouria and makes his escape with Carris. The Patouria crashes and we learn that the Frost Brothers have been watching the whole time. Olba asks what to do about Carris but Shagia says they’ll need a real newtype to lead the new federation. The Freeden crew sees Carris off as he has decided to return to Fort Severn. If the people accept him, he vows to spend the rest of his life rebuilding it. Garrod says that it is normal to crave power and wants to go to Carris. Jamil tells Garrod that it was Carris’s own choice to be an artificial newtype and he chose to endure the Synapse Syndrome. As he is walking away, Carris promises that he’ll overcome Synapse Syndrome and live on.

Paul Jr’s Thoughts:
Today’s episode was not boring for a second. 20 minutes of your life will be over and you won’t notice it. The whole Freeden team contributed to taking down Patouria and probably saved the world. We also have the prospect of Jamil being a full time pilot in the Bertigo as well. Where will the party bus head to next? And what has become of Ennil El?
