Episode 17 - Please determine that for yourself

Review by Paul McCartney Junior

The last time we watched Gundam X, the Satellite System had been activated. The white dolphin tells Tifa that it hates humans. It refuses to open its mind to Tifa and all the dolphins swim off. The satellite laser dissipates as they leave. The next morning, Garrod reports what he saw to Jamil. They come to agree that someone else has a GX and there may be a newtype. The Freeden departs and begins to cross the sea. On the orc ship, Doza Bale orders the D Navi system put into all the mobile suits. A mechanic says that for the cost of the D Navi system, they could buy several Gundam class suits. Doza says he wants a real Gundam and orders them back to work.

Like normal, Garrod delivers Tifa her breakfast and invites her to come to the chow hall. He tells her it is unhealthy to stay so withdrawn but withdraws his opinion when she looks at him. Tifa says he is right and it is becoming difficult. Their holy moment is interrupted by Garrod noticing an incoming ship through the window. After running out of the room yelling that everyone needs to prepare for battle, the doctor stops him and tells him it’s just a Sea Vulture who they are doing business with. They buy parts that will allow the Leopard to fight underwater. Sam asks a man if he has radar for underwater. The man tells him radar is useless with all the junk that is under the water. He tells them about the D Navi system that Doza Bale invented. D means Dolphin and Navi is short for Navigation. They use the brain of a dolphin to power it. Doza Bale and his ship are chasing a group of dolphins about now and he reminds everyone that the life of the D Navi system is limited so fresh dolphins are needed.

Garrod mentions the white dolphin and the man gets excited. As the dolphins escape Doza Bale, the white dolphin jumps out of the water. While the white dolphin is evading torpedoes effortlessly, Garrod is telling Jamil about it. The white dolphin is able to talk with Tifa. Garrod says it has special abilities. The rest of the bridge says it sounds like a fairy tale. Garrod likens the dolphin’s situation to Tifa’s and then compares it to when people wanted to abuse Jamil’s power. Tifa, who has been outside the door, eavesdropping, confirms that what Garrod said is true. Jamil agrees to save the dolphin and Tifa offers to guide everyone there. The GX and Airmaster launch. Leopard still isn’t finished so Roybea must stay behind.

Seeing the Gundams, Doza Bale decides to forget the white dolphin and attack the Gundams. Garrod submerges and is hit by 2 volleys of torpedoes. Although he is unable to see through the bubbles around him, the orcs with the D Navi system can pinpoint him just fine. Garrod’s divider shield is his saving grace as the Daughtseats pound on him. Doza orders the mobile suits to split up and attack the Gundams while the ships go after dolphins. Wits is able to dodge several torpedoes but gets hit by one. Roybea tells the mechanics to hurry up. Garrod continues taking heavy fire from the Daughtseats and luckily his cockpit holds up. Tifa is now talking to the white dolphin. The dolphin tells her to retreat the ship. Tifa tells the dolphin that humans are capable of killing each other. Tonya comments on how Tifa hasn’t talked this much before. Garrod begins using the harmonica cannon and keeps the Daughtseats at bay. Doza orders his ship to destroy the Freeden. Wits falls back to defend it but an explosion knocks him underwater. The GX catches Airmaster by the arm and they agree they’re pretty screwed.

Three Daughtseats lock onto the Gundams and prepare to fire. Jamil orders the Freeden to prepare for hand to hand combat when the white dolphin swims between the Gundams and the Daughtseats. Garrod pleads with the dolphin to leave. Tifa appears to understand the dolphin’s intent. Suddenly, the dolphin lets out a cry which causes one Daughtseat to malfunction. Another cry begins blowing up all the D Navi systems. Gundam Leopard finally launches and the three Gundams move to counter attack. The Leopard’s torpedo cannon takes down the Daughtseats underwater and Wits and Garrod use this chance to resurface. Garrod cuts a pursuing Daughtseat with his beam saber. Leopard begins taking out ships. Airmaster comes from above and destroys Doza’s personal ships. Three more Daughtseats surface and meet their end from the Harmonica cannon. The white dolphin goes by the GX and Garrod asks if it saved him.

Soon after, Garrod, Tifa, Roybea, Wits, Sarah and Tonya are on the Freeden’s deck. The white dolphin jumps from the water and tells Tifa that life is getting better and not to lose hope. Jamil says that maybe the dolphin was a newtype. The Doctor says that from the book he read, Dolphins have no concept of killing each other. Tifa tells Garrod that he will no longer have to deliver her meals. He reaches to hold her hand but can’t bring himself to do it. In the end, we’re gazing into the sunset with the Freeden.

Paul Jr’s Thoughts:
Again, we get another addition to the UC. Dolphins being unable to kill each other sounds a lot like Zeon Daikun’s idea of newtypes being able to live without war. It’s nice to see Tifa say more than 3 lines in one scene; maybe we can learn of her past now. Today’s only question is where to next?
