Episode 39 - There will always be a moon
Here we are the final battle rages on. As both armies lay into each other, the Frosts’ infiltration team makes it to the microwave’s control center. They set the microwave to manual control as ordered. The Frosts finish off the Bit mobile suits and Shagia makes a joke about it being controlled by a newtype. They find out that their infiltration force accomplished their mission and Olba readies the satellite launcher. After the Ashtaron folds up, the Virsago mounts it and mans the satellite launcher. Shagia says “Jamil Neet was scared and Garrod Ran wouldn’t pull the trigger but we have no hesitation or regret.” Shagia orders the infiltration team to ready the microwave system.
Inside Dome, everyone wakes up and appears to be floating in a blue aura with lights flying by. There is talk of what exactly the experience is until Tifa informs them that Dome is coming. The blue ball of light approaches them and Tifa says that it is the mind of the first newtype which exists after his body has been destroyed. Garrod asks Tifa if this is where she needed to get. She says yes, since the war is over Newtype ideology, only the truth from the first newtype can end it. She also says she’d like to know herself what the truth behind her abilities is. Dome floats into Tifa’s hands and welcomes her. It notices that 2 people who were supposed to come refused (Pretty sure it means the Frosts). Tifa says they only want war instead of truth. Dome asks when they will be tired of war. Dome goes on and says that those who worship newtypes, those who conceal and use newtypes and those who once were all have different views which lead to conflict. Dome, however, doesn’t blame them but the fact that they are influenced by the illusion of newtype. Jamil and Bloodman respond but Zidel go onto challenge Dome and ask why he says Newtypes are in illusion if he is one. Jamil asks if the power causing the current phenomena is from the evolution of human beings. Dome says he understands why Jamil wants to see it that way but unfortunately it is not true. The room goes dark and then a red nebula appears. Dome says that once, people had no values. The desire for something more lead to wars and soon, he, the first newtype was born. He says he may have been a mutant but doesn’t know why he had that power. His powers turned into the new value for people to wish for. At the end of his life, the word Newtype should’ve died as well but people were so possessed by it that they wanted more newtypes.
Bloodman steps forward and asks if newtypes do not create the future. Dome says that is correct but neither do people who cling to the past. Zidel begins to yell at Dome. He has believed in newtypes and it is too late for him to deny it. Dome tells him that so long as he holds onto that thought, there is no future for spacenoids. Jamil steps forward and asks if his vision of the future was only a dream. Dome says that even if you see the future, it is up to you to make it real. The time when people search for newtypes is over, Dome says, and it is time now to make the future for yourself. Dome says that Garrod seems to have done a swell job in undoing every premonition that Tifa had. Jamil says that many people were too possessed by the word newtype, including him and then does the unthinkable. Jamil removes his sunglasses.
Dome asks Tifa if she admitted her power once she was bound to Garrod. She says she only wanted to prevent her future with Garrod from being a sad one. She says if possible, she’d rather live as an ordinary person than a newtype. Dome says that now there is no such thing as the word newtype and says he can return to where he belongs. The blue ball of light drifts upward and slowly fades away. Bloodman and Zidel protest Dome’s leaving and wonder what they will do without newtypes. Lancelow says that no such thing ever existed and turns to Jamil who nods. Dome tells them that the old times are over and disappears.
The last few moments seem to have occurred outside of time as now the microwave system activates. It hits the Virsago’s solar panels and the Frosts prepare to decimate both armies. Olba sees the 3 ships leaving the microwave system. Bloodman sees the battle and says he ordered a cease-fire. Zidel figures that the New Federation tricked them and prepares to fire on Bloodman’s ship. Before they can fire, a high powered wave of energy from the Frosts’ satellite launcher takes out Zidel’s ship. Bloodman celebrates as Shagia moves the ray. The Freeden is lucky to escape major damage but the paint on the bottom of the ship is melted. Shagia continues to move the ray and takes out Bloodman’s ship as well.
The Frosts glorify themselves in their victory but soon find that the Double X is charging them. Garrod draws his beam saber and knocks the Virsago off the Ashtaron. Shagia draws his beam saber and deadlocks with Garrod. Garrod asks Shagia why he took out the ship on his own side. Shagia says it is because they only want newtypes. Olba grabs the Double X and says that Garrod needs to join them. Garrod tries to tell them that they should’ve made contact with Dome as well. Shagia tries to run in Garrod but is interrupted by a volley of missiles courtesy of Roybea. Garrod sees the Freeden team coming to reinforce him. The Frosts see that reinforcements are coming and leave the Freeden team to them. The Daughtresses are quickly handled by the Freeden team and Jamil tells Garrod to stop the Frosts.
The Frosts have regrouped and ready their satellite launcher again. They order the microwave to be sent and begin charging. Garrod flies in front of them and activates his own satellite system. The Double X’s command overrides the manual control and the microwave goes to the Double X. Olba has no choice but to fire the incompletely charged launcher. Garrod responds with his own Satellite Cannon. The beams collide and cause an explosion, engulfing the Frosts, damaging the Double X greatly and taking out the microwave system on the moon.
We’re now back on Earth, 6 months later. At a train station, Garrod and Tifa say goodbye to Carris. They ask about his health and he says he can live with it. He also says he wants time alone to think about what Dome said to them. As Garrod and Tifa are on a train, they hear on a radio that space colony Cloud Nine and the New Federation have finished their 3rd peace conference. In space, 3 ships from each army face each other. Inside one of them, a meeting room containing Cloud Nine and New Federation officers is headed by Jamil and Lancelow who shake hands. Sarah is at Jamil’s side, she introduces herself to Lancelow and Jamil says that she is his most trusted partner.
Paula and the mechanics started a junkyard called Freeden III. The former helmsman gets off the phone and tells them they have a new job fixing mobile suits. Sam jumps in excitement and Paula tells him not to remodel them without permission. Another mechanic says that Sam probably will even if she says that. Doctor Techs parts a fight in a field hospital between a guerilla and a New Federation soldier. He offers them each a cup of coffee and reminds them that there is no guerilla or New Federation when you’re wounded. Wits took Tonya back to his family’s farm where she says it looks like a golden sheet. He tries to say he wants to make her happy when Roybea and Ennil pull up in a buggy. Ennil says she wants to live near Tonya and asks if she minds. Tonya says not at all as Wits looks on in disbelief. Roybea says that they will stay near them for awhile. Wits asks Roybea why he is with Ennil. Roybea says it doesn’t matter and Wits calls him a bastard. Before either of them know it, the girls drive off with the buggy and Tonya says they will see him there. The boys run after the buggy.
If you can remember way back from episode 1, the Twin Red Stars are again claiming they’re famous newtype soldiers. Garrod and Tifa walk by and stand in the back of the small crowd. The fatter one points to Garrod and asks if he believes in newtypes. Tifa politely says ‘of course’ and Garrod agrees. As the camera zooms away, we see that the damaged Freeden 2 has been stationed upright, supported by metal beams and what appears to be Olba Frost with Shagia in a wheelchair. We see the damaged Double X in space, drifting past the moon as the narrator says “No matter what happens to the Earth, there will always be a moon”
The End
Paul Jr’s thoughts:
Now we should be sad that the series is all over for us. The final battle between Garrod and the Frosts wasn’t as climactic as some battles we’ve seen in Gundam. And here we have it; Dome says that Newtype is just an illusion though he says nothing about where the special abilities come from. His view is just as valid as Zeon Daikun’s I guess. Jamil finally took off his sunglasses and in the end; everyone turned out happy all though Roybea and Ennil was a bit of a shock to me. The Frosts at the end? Maybe that was a joke or they’re mentally crippled like Katejina at the end of Victory Gundam. All in all, this was a pretty good series. It is probably the best option for going from the AUs to the UC. These have only been my opinions so you’ll have to view it yourself to enjoy it.
